What is the Body Fat Calculator?
The body fat calculator estimates your body fat percentage using the US Navy method, a widely validated formula that requires only circumference measurements: neck, waist, and hips (for women). This method is used by military personnel, fitness professionals, and health practitioners worldwide because it requires no special equipment and provides reasonably accurate results for most adults.
Unlike BMI, which only considers height and weight, body fat percentage directly measures the proportion of fat mass to total body weight. This makes it a more accurate indicator of health risk, fitness level, and body composition progress.
The US Navy method uses logarithmic equations derived from anthropometric research. The formulas differ for men and women to account for differences in fat distribution:
Accuracy & Limitations
When measurements are taken correctly, the US Navy method has an accuracy of approximately ±3–4% compared to DEXA scans (the gold standard for body composition). Factors affecting accuracy include:
- Measurement technique and tape placement
- Time of day (measurements vary with hydration and food intake)
- Body type extremes (very muscular or very lean individuals)
- Age-related changes in fat distribution
For best results: use a flexible, non-stretch tape measure; take measurements in the morning before eating; have someone assist you; and track trends over time rather than focusing on single readings.
How to Use This Body Fat Calculator
1
Select Gender & Units
Choose Male or Female (formulas differ). Select Metric (cm) or Imperial (inches) for your measurements.
2
Enter Height
Input your height in cm or feet/inches. This is used in the logarithmic calculation.
3
Measure Neck, Waist & Hips
Follow the measurement guide: Neck below larynx, Waist at navel (men) or narrowest point (women), Hips at widest buttock point (women only). Enter values carefully.

View Results & Categories
Your estimated body fat percentage appears instantly with your category (Essential, Athletes, Fitness, Acceptable, or Obese) and healthy range guidance.
Army Body Fat Standards
The US Army uses body fat percentage (not BMI) to assess soldier fitness. Maximum allowable body fat percentages vary by age and gender:
- Men 17-20: ≤20% | 21-27: ≤22% | 28-39: ≤24% | 40+: ≤26%
- Women 17-20: ≤30% | 21-27: ≤32% | 28-39: ≤34% | 40+: ≤36%
This calculator uses the same US Navy method employed by the military, making it suitable for army body fat assessment preparation. Always confirm requirements with your specific branch.
How to Reduce Body Fat Percentage
Sustainable body fat reduction combines nutrition, training, and consistency:
- Calorie deficit: 300–500 kcal/day below TDEE for 0.3–0.5 kg/week fat loss
- Protein intake: 1.6–2.2g per kg body weight to preserve muscle during deficit
- Strength training: 2–4 sessions/week to maintain or build lean mass
- Cardio: 150+ minutes moderate or 75+ minutes vigorous activity weekly
- Sleep & stress: 7–9 hours sleep and stress management support hormonal balance
Track progress with measurements and photos, not just scale weight. Body recomposition (losing fat while gaining muscle) may show minimal weight change but significant body fat percentage improvement.
